If you find yourself sleeping on pins and needles because of strange noises around your house or tent; if the cash compartment of your wallet collects more dust than cash, or you’re simply looking for a super fun way to distract your kids, to get them active again and off your back for “something to do,” then you’ve come to the right place. My Eyeclops night vision goggles review explains how you can ease your nerves and satisfy your kids—all in one package.
I have to say, these Night Vision Stealth Binoculars are just plain cool looking! It’s like seeing something right out of Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica. If anything, these night sights are a great conversation starter. Show a picture of this slick device to your kids and I can almost guarantee you’ll see them on Santa’s list come December.
Real infrared technology at a great price point.
The Eyeclops 2.0 Night Vision Infrared Stealth Binoculars make use of three circular sets of LEDs. The center group is red, and the two outer smaller groups are clear in color but emit infrared light. This enables the user to switch between two modes: stealth or long-range mode. Here’s how this works:
In stealth mode, only the outer infrared LEDs operate and emit no visible light. The range of view is about 20 feet in complete darkness. In long-range mode, only the inner group of red LEDs operate and emit visible light, though they’re dim and barely noticeable (except by someone with another night vision device). In long-range mode, viewing distance is extended to about 50 feet, which is what the manufacturer, Jakks Pacific, promises.
They also promise clear vision in 100 percent darkness, and though this night vision binocular certainly works in 100 percent darkness, the vision is a little grainy. But still, it works as advertised and is real night vision technology.
It’s all about the LCD display.
Jakks implements a dual-eye LCD display in version 2.0, whereas their previous version only offered visual elements that converted to a monocular. In essence, this is a monocular that mimics a binocular because the dual eyepieces focus onto a single LCD monitor within the device.
The benefit here to the buyer is that a standard monocular night vision device severely reduces peripheral vision, whereas binocular night vision expands peripheral vision. Rather than having to close one eye to look through a monocular, the Eyeclops binocular allows you to use both eyes, even though you’re only viewing one screen. This creates a safer, more realistic experience overall. And the greater field of vision helps reduce the dizzying effect that’s common to some night vision devices.
Solid construction, super cool look.
The black plastic molding of version 2.0 is much more durable than version 1.0—the first evolution goggles—making the Eyeclops infrared binoculars great for backpacking and camping, as well as for kids doing backyard covert ops at night, looking for an advantage over their enemy. And the space-age design actually has a functional element, making it firm in your grip.
There is an adjustable focus feature on the front lens and an adjustable width feature for the dual-eyepiece, though the adjustment happens internally, making the outer dual eyecup an imperfect fit for some people. The downside there is that if the eyecup molding doesn’t fit tightly around the contour of your face, there will be small amounts of light escaping the eye area, giving away your position to the enemy. But I doubt anyone would be able to see you without they themselves using a night vision device.
A kaleidoscope of color.
Both the box for the Eyeclops 2.0 Night Vision Infrared Stealth Binoculars and the supplied user manual list two options for color display, green vision, like the military uses, or black and white spy vision. But what I discovered was that if you switch the color switch back and forth four times instead of two, you actually cycle through four color options—green, black and white, red, and blue.
Kids will dig the warrior feel of green night vision! This is the chance, after all, for your kids to mimic their Special Ops heroes of the upcoming November release—Call of Duty 4: Black Ops II
In fact, how great would it be to hand your son or daughter a copy of Call of Duty 4: Black Ops II together with a set of Eyeclops 2.0 Night Vision Infrared Binoculars as a “way-too-cool” gift? They’d be over the moon with excitement! I would be and I’m 48 years old!
Easy to use right out of the box.
Another great feature of the Eyeclops 2.0 Binocular is its ease of use right out of the box. The contents of the box include the binocular, safety strap, and manual (seen below as I unpacked the box).
The manual is easy to understand should you have any difficulty. In fact, there really isn’t much of a manual—just 4 pages of diagrams and pictures pointing out the feature buttons, and a few standard precautionary warnings thrown in about safety.
NOTE: This night vision device requires 5 AA batteries to operate and must be purchased separately. They do NOT come in the box.
Final assessment of the Eyeclops Night Vision Goggles.
Some of the benefits to version 2.0 that deserve mention in this Eyeclops night vision goggles review are:
- Larger field of vision which eliminates dizzying disorientation associated with the original version.
- Much safer for kids (recommended for ages 8 and up) than the original goggles because version 2.0 is handheld with dual-eye night vision technology, not the original monocular goggle that gets strapped to the wearer’s head.
- Comes with safety neck-strap.
- Though listed by the manufacturer as a “high tech toy,” Eyeclops 2.0 Night Vision Binoculars are powered by real infrared technology, making them the real deal.
- Close and long-range switch which allows for up to 50 feet of clear night vision in 100 percent darkness. Most night vision devices (NVDs) require at least a little ambient light, particularly at the lower price points, so this is quite an exciting benefit.
- For $70, an exceptional price for night vision technology.
Overall, this lightweight, durable, easy to use and very affordable “high tech toy,” provides great utility and is terrifically fun at an astonishing price point. Whether for the house, the car, the kids, or your next camping adventure, you want this ultra cool night vision device. It’s not a military grade night vision goggle, but it’s a tons-of-fun grade night vision binocular. This would definitely make a great Christmas or birthday gift for kids and adults alike.
